We Played GAME OF THRONES In CRUSADER KINGS

Crusader Kings 2 is a slow-paced strategy game, where you control the dynastic head of a family in medieval Europe, from lowly count to Holy Roman Emperor. Its original chronology took place between Norman invasion of England in 1066 and the fall of Byzantium in 1453. However, several expansions have started the game hundreds of years earlier, and also make Vikings, Muslims, and even the Indian sub-continent playable.

We played GAME OF THRONES in CRUSADER KINGS

Last year I played a multi-generational game of grand strategy Crusader Kings 2 using the A Game of Thrones mod, which transforms the historical medieval setting of CK2 into the continent of Westeros from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels (and the HBO series). My goal was to play as the most minor of lords and experience the conflict and drama of Westeros from the ground floor. Game of Checkers will run on Sundays for the next ten weeks.

For many, the ruler creator in Crusader Kings III is a place to create genetically gifted kings and queens, reimagine beloved fictional characters, or construct the historically improbable for goofy challenge runs (or, to create genuine horrors). History teacher Lucas Busquet de Azevedo, on the other hand, was able to recreate himself, using the game's tools with impressive precision.

MichaelAs someone who was jumping back into the game after having not played it for a while, the tutorial was exactly what I wanted: a quick refresher course and an introduction to the buttons. For me, I was able to pick everything up pretty easily, but I can also see how someone completely new to the game might be really overwhelmed. Like, one of the most important things you can do early on is build holdings to raise your tax revenue, but that seems underemphasized in the tutorial.

Since these games tend to feature continuous development, it is also worth noting that I am writing this as Friends & Foes has just dropped and I have played that and all the DLC through its launch, so this discussion is going to reflect the game as it exists in September, 2022. Finally, the Crusader Kings map stretches all the way through central and southern Asia, but my comments here will mostly be focused on the broader Mediterranean because that is where my knowledge of the history is best and also where I tend to choose to play in the game.

While responding to a comment above about Baldwin of Flanders and Judith of France it occurred to me that a game variant played as a consort exercising influence through her husband and sons could be very interesting. Medieval noblewomen had ambitions and agency of their own and often started out with the advantages of a landed dowry and powerful relatives that could be used as leverage over her consort and to build independent support.

If you're a strategy game veteran, you'll have no problems here. Those who are big GoT fans but who haven't played a game like Crusader Kings II, don't panic; it may look complex, but it's surprisingly easy to get a handle on, and you can have enjoyable games only knowing the very basics of its structure. Later playthroughs, where you can dig a little deeper, will only get better.

This gameplay-favored design choice is perhaps best exemplified by the existence of a single Cultural Head that embodies the entire complex cultural landscape of your dynasty. "In the game we have the concept of a Cultural Head, which is vaguely inspired by real historical kings inspiring the common folk to adapt to certain ideas. But we give them a more tangible role in the technological progress and innovation progress in the game," the designer described.
